Doubts about the ‘right of import’ for recordings

An article over at Kahoku Online Network makes a few good points about the so called right of import for recordings (レコード輸入権) that is proposed in a recent draft of future copyright legislation. In order to protect the Japanese market and in the framework of harmonization with legislation in other countries (hence the referenced map), a right of import for recordings is to be introduced in 2004.

However, the article (correctly) states that this new right does not serve individual artists, but instead, industries that rely on these artists for their profits and that, unfortunately, the consumer side of the whole story has been greatly neglected so far.
