The CX 3216LMSWBB paradox

Interesting paradox in the documentation that comes with the Dynabook CX 3216LMSWBB – compare 1. with 2.:

  1. Instead of recovery disks, the CX 3216LMSWBB comes with a recovery image on (an invisible partition of) the hard drive. A system recovery can be started by holding the 0 down at startup. The problem with this method is that it is error prone (e.g. it might not work after you’ve repartitioned your hard drive) + that it eats a lot of disk space.

Alternatively, you can create a set of recovery disks beforehand and use those for your system recovery. (Note: this is all written in the 「困ったときは」 (”What to do when you have a problem”) booklet, which people usually only read when they have a problem and when it is usually too late to create such a set of recovery disks.)

  2. When reading through the rest of the documentation, I bumped into this warning (注意事項): [...] お客様は、本ディスクおよびリカバリイメージを複製することはできません。[...] (”Customers are not allowed to duplicate the (installation) disks or the recovery image”)

Now, tell me how it is possible to repartition the hard drive of the CX 3216LMSWBB (e.g. in order to install Linux) without going against Toshiba’s copyright warning and without losing the OS you paid for (= Windows XP)?

  1. You do not loose the OS because you still have the lic. number and the CD.

Even if you change your partitions, you could still back using tools like Partition Magic to same size and number as you buy it.
