Region control for the PSP?

Yesterday morning, Sony launched its much anticipated PlayStation Portable (PSP) console. One of the reasons PlayStation fans looked forward to the release was the fact that games would be region free—playing a Japanese game on an American console, for instance, shouldn’t be a problem anymore.

A day after the official launch, the reality seems to be different: apparently, PSP games seem to be region locked, contrary to Sony’s previous announcement. As the PSP is currently only available in Japan, it is too early to verify this, though. In the words of TechJapan: “We’re about 98% sure the PSP does indeed have support for region-locked games.”

More info about regional lockout over at Wikipedia.

Update: apparently, the region lock is only there for movies and music—not for games.
