“Complicated copyrights”

You gotta love’s commentary on the rumors that iTunes Japan will be launched somewhere next month (emphasis added):

Apple’s entry [into the Japanese music download business] has been delayed because copyrights on recorded music are complicated in Japan.


Update: The rumors appeared to be true: iTunes Japan was launched on August 4, with a price tag of 150-200 Yen per song and with songs wrapped in the already familiar FairPlay DRM. Interestingly enough, Sony Japan does not participate …
